Drowning in Data: How Information Abundance Corrupts the Rational Mind

Denis Diderot spent decades assembling the Encyclopédie on the conviction that organized, accessible knowledge would liberate the human mind from superstition and arbitrary authority. The project was audacious, even dangerous—French authorities suppressed it repeatedly, sensing that a citizenry equipped with comprehensive information would prove ungovernable by ignorance alone. Diderot was right about that much. What he could not have foreseen is that the descendants of his encyclopedic ambition—search engines, social media feeds, 24-hour news cycles—would produce not a population of sharper reasoners, but a civilization exhibiting what psychologists now call decision paralysis on an almost civilizational scale.

The paradox is genuine and well-documented. More information, past a certain threshold, does not improve the quality of human judgment. It degrades it.

The Architecture of Overload

The cognitive science literature on this phenomenon is substantial and, taken together, quietly devastating. Barry Schwartz's foundational work on the paradox of choice demonstrated that consumers presented with 24 varieties of jam were significantly less likely to make a purchase—and significantly less satisfied when they did—than those shown only six options. The jam experiment has since been replicated across domains ranging from retirement fund selection to medical treatment choices, and the results hold with uncomfortable consistency.

What happens inside the mind under conditions of informational excess is not mysterious, though it is frequently misunderstood. The brain does not simply slow down when confronted with too many variables; it begins to substitute easier cognitive tasks for harder ones. Psychologists call this attribute substitution—when a difficult question presents itself, the mind quietly replaces it with a simpler question and answers that instead. Asked to evaluate ten competing health insurance plans across forty variables, most Americans do not perform a rational cost-benefit analysis. They choose the plan their neighbor recommended, or the one with the most recognizable logo, or the one listed first on the screen. The information was available. The reasoning was not.

This is not a failure of intelligence. It is a feature of a cognitive architecture shaped by evolutionary pressures that had no category for the modern information environment. Our ancestors needed to make rapid decisions under uncertainty; the ability to act decisively on incomplete information was adaptive. What was never selected for was the capacity to process, weight, and synthesize hundreds of competing data points under conditions of low immediate threat. We are, in a precise sense, cognitively mismatched to the world we have built.

When Algorithms Curate Reality

The problem is compounded, rather than resolved, by the algorithmic systems we have deployed to manage informational abundance. Recommendation engines and content-filtering systems promise to surface relevant information and suppress noise—and they do, after a fashion. But the criteria by which they define relevance are not epistemic. They are behavioral. These systems optimize for engagement, which is to say they optimize for emotional arousal, tribal confirmation, and the neurological reward circuits associated with novelty. They are extraordinarily effective at delivering content that feels important while systematically deprioritizing content that is important but requires sustained attention to evaluate.

The result is a population that is simultaneously over-informed and under-reasoned. The average American adult now consumes roughly eleven hours of media per day, according to Nielsen data. Yet surveys consistently show declining capacity to evaluate source credibility, distinguish correlation from causation, or hold a complex argument in working memory long enough to assess its validity. We are not becoming less intelligent. We are becoming less practiced at thinking—because the informational environment actively rewards reaction over reflection.

This is where the Enlightenment tradition offers something more than historical curiosity.

What the 18th Century Understood About Knowing

The epistemological project of the Enlightenment was not simply to accumulate knowledge but to develop principled methods for organizing and evaluating it. Figures like Locke, Hume, and Condorcet were obsessed not merely with what could be known, but with how one could be confident that one knew it—and equally confident about the boundaries of one's knowledge. Hume's insistence on distinguishing matters of fact from relations of ideas was not pedantry; it was a cognitive discipline, a habit of mind that forced the reasoner to identify the precise nature of any claim before assessing its validity.

This epistemological hygiene is almost entirely absent from contemporary public discourse. We have inherited the Enlightenment's faith in the emancipatory power of information while abandoning its rigorous methods for managing that information. We consume data without frameworks; we accumulate opinions without examining the inferential chains that connect evidence to conclusion. The Encyclopédie was not merely a repository of facts—it was an argument about how facts should be organized, connected, and interpreted. That argument is what we have lost.

Toward a Discipline of Selective Attention

Recovering something of that tradition requires confronting an uncomfortable truth: the rational response to information abundance may be deliberate, principled restriction. Not censorship, and not willful ignorance, but the kind of disciplined selectivity that the Enlightenment thinkers themselves practiced—choosing which domains to pursue with depth rather than attempting comprehensive coverage of everything.

Montaigne, writing two centuries before the Encyclopédie, described his intellectual method as one of sustained engagement with a small number of questions rather than superficial familiarity with many. He returned to the same problems repeatedly, from different angles, accumulating not more information but greater understanding of a bounded territory. This is a model of cognition that the digital environment actively discourages—and that individuals must now consciously choose to practice against the grain of their informational surroundings.

Some researchers in the field of judgment and decision-making have begun advocating for what they call satisficing with awareness—the deliberate choice to make good-enough decisions based on a manageable subset of available information, combined with explicit acknowledgment of what has been set aside. This is not the maximizing rationality of classical economic theory. It is something closer to the practical wisdom that Enlightenment thinkers recognized as distinct from, and in some respects superior to, purely theoretical reason.

The promise of universal knowledge was never that every person would know everything. It was that every person would know how to think—how to evaluate a claim, weigh competing considerations, and arrive at provisional conclusions held with appropriate confidence. That promise remains worth keeping. But keeping it now requires something Diderot's contemporaries did not need: the discipline to look away.
