The Anesthesia of Discovery: On Science's Vanishing Capacity to Astonish
In September 2015, two detectors in Louisiana and Washington State registered a disturbance in spacetime so faint that it displaced their mirrors by a fraction of a proton's width. The signal had traveled 1.3 billion years from the collision of two black holes—objects so dense that not even light escapes their gravity—and it arrived on Earth as a chirp lasting a fifth of a second. The scientists who detected it wept. The rest of the world, by and large, read a headline and kept scrolling.
This disparity—between the magnitude of what was discovered and the brevity of the public's engagement with it—is worth dwelling on. It is not, I want to argue, a story about public ignorance. It is a story about the conditions under which wonder can survive, and the systematic ways in which those conditions have been undermined.
The Speed at Which Marvels Expire
Wonder is not a passive response to information. It is a cognitive and emotional event that requires time, context, and a certain quality of attention. The philosopher Mary-Jane Rubenstein has described it as a state of being arrested—stopped in one's tracks by an encounter with something that exceeds the categories available to comprehend it. By that definition, wonder is structurally incompatible with the pace at which scientific findings now move through public consciousness.
The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 was announced, celebrated briefly, and then absorbed into the background hum of science news within a news cycle. The sequencing of the human genome—an achievement that genuinely redefined what it means to be a biological organism—was greeted with appropriate fanfare in the year 2000 and then promptly transformed into a consumer product. Today one can purchase a genetic ancestry kit at Costco for less than the price of a decent dinner. The miracle has become a commodity, which is to say it has ceased, functionally, to be a miracle at all.
This is the paradox: the acceleration of discovery has not deepened our relationship with the extraordinary. It has habituated us to it.
What Genuine Astonishment Once Looked Like
History offers instructive contrasts. When Galileo turned his telescope toward Jupiter in January 1610 and observed four small points of light that moved—moons, he concluded, orbiting another planet—the implications took decades to fully metabolize. The discovery did not merely add a data point to astronomical catalogs. It shattered a cosmological framework that had organized Western thought for nearly two thousand years. The astonishment it produced was not a fleeting sensation. It was a prolonged, culture-wide reckoning.
Similarly, when Darwin published On the Origin of Species in 1859, the response was not a news cycle but a decades-long argument that restructured theology, philosophy, anthropology, and the self-conception of the species doing the arguing. The book's implications were so far-reaching that educated Americans and Britons were still publicly wrestling with them well into the twentieth century. That sustained engagement—contentious, often painful, sometimes illuminating—was itself a form of collective wonder.
The difference between those historical episodes and our present condition is not that science has become less revolutionary. If anything, the opposite is true. The difference is that we have lost the institutional and cultural scaffolding that allowed revolutionary findings to arrest us long enough to do their full cognitive work.
Two Enemies of Awe
The forces eroding wonder are not singular, but two deserve particular attention.
The first is what might be called popularization-for-profit—the transformation of scientific communication into entertainment optimized for broad, frictionless consumption. The science documentary, the TED talk, the explainer article with its reassuring headline and its final paragraph of uplifting implications: these formats share a structural commitment to accessibility that, pursued relentlessly, becomes its own kind of distortion. In the effort to make science palatable, they tend to sand away precisely the features that make it genuinely strange. The incomprehensibility of quantum mechanics, the vertiginous timescales of geology, the unsettling contingency of evolutionary history—these are not obstacles to public understanding that good communication should overcome. They are, in large measure, the point. A version of science from which the discomfort has been removed is a version from which the wonder has been removed as well.
The second enemy is hyper-specialization within science itself. The disciplinary fragmentation of academic research—a process that has only accelerated since the mid-twentieth century—means that most scientists work in domains so narrow that even their immediate colleagues in adjacent subfields cannot fully evaluate their work. This specialization has produced extraordinary technical achievements. It has also produced a scientific culture in which the capacity to stand back and be astonished by the whole—to ask what any of this means in the broadest sense—is regarded with a certain professional suspicion. Wonder, in this environment, is for science communicators and schoolchildren. The working scientist has hypotheses to test.
The Enlightenment's Forgotten Emotion
It is worth recalling that the great figures of the Enlightenment did not regard wonder as antithetical to rational inquiry. They regarded it as its animating source. Diderot, whose encyclopedic project sought to map the totality of human knowledge, wrote with undisguised amazement about the spider spinning silk from its own body, about the mathematics underlying musical harmony, about the fact that the human eye could resolve a candle flame at fourteen miles. For him, the accumulation of knowledge was not a process that diminished mystery but one that revealed its depths.
That orientation—in which understanding and astonishment reinforce rather than displace each other—is precisely what contemporary scientific culture struggles to sustain. The problem is not that we know too much. It is that we have developed habits of knowing that are inhospitable to the emotional and philosophical dimensions of discovery.
Recovering the Arrested Moment
Recovering wonder is not a matter of knowing less or pretending that difficult findings are simpler than they are. It requires, rather, a deliberate resistance to the pace and format through which science is currently delivered to public consciousness.
This means, in practice, reading primary sources and serious long-form science writing rather than headlines—engaging with findings at the length and depth they require rather than the length our attention budgets permit. It means tolerating, even cultivating, the experience of not immediately understanding something. The sensation of conceptual inadequacy in the face of a genuinely new idea is not a failure of intelligence. It is the precondition of wonder.
It also means that scientists themselves bear some responsibility. The researchers who wept in Louisiana in 2015 understood what they had witnessed. The challenge is to communicate not merely the finding but the weight of it—to resist the institutional pressures toward modesty, accessibility, and the tidy summary, and to insist, occasionally, that what has just been discovered is stranger and more significant than any available analogy can capture.
Wonder is not decorative. It is the emotional signature of an encounter with genuine reality—the feeling that what is, exceeds what we had imagined possible. A civilization that loses the capacity for it has not merely become less poetic. It has become less equipped to take the full measure of its own situation. And in an era when science is delivering findings of genuinely existential consequence—about climate, about biology, about the nature of mind itself—that is not a loss we can afford to shrug at.
